In 1999, I was forced to close my in-home daycare due to a heart condition that couldn’t be managed with medication. I needed a new way to earn an income—one that would still allow me to keep my family at the center of my life.
As my own children headed off to college, I watched them—and their classmates—navigate what can be a deeply lonely transition. For many, it was the first time they were truly on their own. Even the most independent young adults need reminders that someone is thinking of them.
Elderly parents with a deep sadness in their eyes—some had families who were simply too busy, while others had no one at all. Even in homes filled with love, I saw the weight of absence.
Hardworking families are doing their best, but with no time left to check in. Guilt. Distance. Overwhelm.
